Question

OK, took Xayd's and glc's opinion and downloaded NS pr3. Nice download speed, btw, 22 megs in 45 min. Saw where Xayd recommended staying away from the feedback agent, but can't figure how NOT to install it, since it's listed with other components.

It's 1230 am, mama's asleep. She's been hollering about all the "java script errors" with 4.05 so I told her what I was up to. I very sincerely hope she doesn't start paging me Sat at work wanting to know, "What did you do to the computer, my e-mail isn't working?". She can't stand IE, which I like.

Got it. I used the Custom and went further and unchecked what I didn't want. Using it now - I shall await the pager.

Yeah, the classic skin is under there too, if you want to turn it on instead of the flashy blue one.

I haven't seen a script error yet. Sites that locked up 4.74 load smooth as a baby's rear end with 6.

If you got the RAM for it, it's a great browser.

It's now 2 a.m. and can't figure out how to get to the classic instead of the blue. I'm bailing out for the night.

What I lost in the transition was the bookmarks. I had backed them up (bookmark.htm) like before on a floppy. When I insert the floppy and click on the file, it says netscape.exe not found. I have stacks of old bookmark files (floppies) I've always been able to use, rather than importing the whole batch. Now I can do neither.

She's getting used to the e-mail, although she says it takes more steps to do everything. Now she wants her old bookmarks, which I can't provide.

Smile oh yes you can ...

Sarge, here's one way of getting your bookmarks back ... Replace the new bookmark.htm with the one on your floppy. [As a safeguard, you may want to rename the new bookmark.htm bookmark.old]

Don't work. I open the floppy and click on the bookmark icon and still says "can't find netscape.exe". I don't have a bookmark.htm with the new Netscape, or anywhere on pc. I have a stack of unusable disks I can't use, unless I reinstall the "old" Netscape. She likes the new version finally, but wants her bookmarks. We're talking a few years worth.

Look around the menus and help system - for something like "importing" bookmarks.

In the main browser window, bookmarks/manage bookmarks/file/import bookmarks/.

Then point it to your htm file. It won't copy anything onto the "personal toolbar" so stuff you need to put back there (if any) just drag and drop in the bookmark utility.

UPDATE: She "insisted", once again, that I put NS 4.05 back on. She is so used to that e-mail format and being able to get her bookmarks back. Now she's back to java script errors, but seems happy again. However, in her first attempt at building a web page with it, she's crashing and getting illegal operations. Of course, IE doesn't have this problem, but she doesn't like that browser. Strange, she's so easy to please (really) in everything else in life. All I can do is snicker (quietly).

See if she can deal with 4.76 - you *can* customize the Messenger window settings. If she still doesnt like it - try 4.08.

The best compromise of speed and script support I've found in the 4.x browsers has been 4.51, you might give it a try.

I know you've got it there Sarge, cause it's on the Supra driver disk .

SARGE,
I'm gonna give you free professional advice because I like you and I'm not even gonna charge you $250 an hour:

Download and install any version of NS/AOL these guys recommend.

Next download IE 5.5 and run it side by side the NS/AOL browser. Don't force Wifey to use the faster and superior IE 5.5 but encourage her to "explore" it (no pun intended) and slowly wean her off of NS/AOL. If she does this, she'll switch and never go back. The SARGE will reside in a happy house once more.

I was a diehard NS user for years and hated ALL earlier versions of IE. I upgraded to NS 4.7 and was continually having problems. Found out, I wasn't alone. Upon tremendous recommendation of members of this board I tried the "NEW" IE 5.5 and have never had a single problem. It's faster than NS/AOL too. It's even got a button to import all your NS bookmarks in about 2 seconds.

Like I said, don't force Wifey to use the new superior/faster IE 5.5, just get her to try it and slowly become familiar with it.

Thanks, guys. Xayd, I got 4.05 off the Supra disk. Lawman, thanks for free advice. These things must be done "delicately", as you propose.
