Cannot find Server or DNS error
Have fixed a virus on this W98SE PC (W32.Lirva) – but since removal of virus, there's this error each time I want to access a web site with Internet Explorer. No repair facility as (5.0) was not listed in Add/Remove Programs, so I installed Internet Explorer 5.5 (over 5.0). Still unable to access web pages, so ran the Repair Tool in IE 5.5. Outlook Express 5.5 works fine but still can’t browse – same error. Have changed the Language setting to User-Defined but made no difference. Have reduced file size for Temporary Internet files to 30 MB. Security level set to Medium. No Firewall installed. Dial-Up connection to ISP.
What else could it be?

here is a first step to try to narrow trouble down::
after successfully dialing in a connecting to the internet via your ISP dial-up>> Go to the dos camand prompt and try this::>>> C:\>ping www.pcmech.com Pinging pcmech.com [209.68.45.231] with 32 bytes of data: Reply from 209.68.45.231: bytes=32 time=49ms TTL=242 Reply from 209.68.45.231: bytes=32 time=49ms TTL=242 Reply from 209.68.45.231: bytes=32 time=46ms TTL=242 Reply from 209.68.45.231: bytes=32 time=48ms TTL=242 Ping statistics for 209.68.45.231: Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss), Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds: Minimum = 46ms, Maximum = 49ms, Average = 48ms C:\> If successful, then you pretty much can determine problem is just with your browser under IE tools>IntrernetOptions>Connections Something must have gotten changed in the settings there. Let us know, by doing a ping that way you are not only verifying good connectivity to the internet via your dial-up adapter, but also showing that your dns servers are set correctly for that dial-up connection. If successful then as I said go to IE tools>internet options>connections tab and highlight that dial-up connection and check properties from there!

Well, the ping worked fine, so I went to check the Connections properties in IE & found that by unticking the Use a Proxy Server box - this fixed the problem.

Glad to hear you found it. Don't know how, but that little box, (Use Proxy) gets checked sometimes!
