Newme, weather or not you hear the "squelching" sound or not is more of a function of weather you have the "line-in" in Sound Control muted or not. Nonetheless, this is not much of a factor of weather your modem is functioning correctly or not. More of a personal preference to weather you prefer to hear the connection attempt or not. BTW what OS are you using? If it is a 9x system, you should be able to go to the Dialup Networking in My Computer and see that your specific modem is in the dialog box. If it has "standard Modem" in the box; try the drop down menu to see if your modem is in that list. If it is select it and follow normal course of following on screen messages. Most likely your system will have to reboot to update configuration settings. Post back and let us know! Good luck.

also the tech support had me change an option in properties
connection settings under use flow control it has option hardware(rts/cts}
software(xon/xoff) they had me select software and in the extra setting put x3 .after doing that it at least would dial and i would get the 678 error.but if i put it on hardware it would say something like check your modem is connected correctly(680 error),thats why i think it might be my modem.and there was something else ,when i had it set on software i did get the operaters voice through the computer saying hang up and dial again,but it only happened once, and then i would get the error 678

GLC, couldn't find that hardware modem on Newegg site, anymore! (They probably wrote it off in their product line due to my incessant phone/email support inquiries! )Did find through google search this one though. Check it out newme.http://store.linkbyte.com/store/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=USR+2976&x=5&y=5 This is same site but USR 2976 w/Voice, same modem essentially, just voice capable. I have this one and am pleased with it. But as I am on cable modem I don't use it much!

I just saw both the 2976 and 2977 at Newegg's site - they are still there.

If you need a cheap modem, the only winmodems that seem to configure consistently are Lucent-based.

Hmmmm, I searched. Must have missed them. Thanks GLC, I'd take a know supplier, like NewEgg over a newsite anyday. Cheaper there too.
