Question

I've read such good things about the new netscape, that i decided to replace my 4.73. I successfully download the preliminary exe. But when i click on that fill out all the relevent paperwork etc proceed to download, It then searches 10 locations in rotation and finds none available (presumeably), then asks whether i'd like it look again. Eventually i get fed up with this nonsence. Incidentally, I've tried leaving the download location as default, Australia & NZ -where i am, and North America. None work.
Any ideas anyone?

This should work

Power up your favourite FTP client [not IE ] then go to this directory ...

go to your closest netscape FTP mirror [or ftp.netscape.com] port 21, login anonymous ..
Directory: /pub/netscape6/english/6_PR3/windows/win32/sea/ download N6Setup.exe [22198416 bytes]

[ URL: ftp://ftp.netscape.com//pub/netscape...ea/N6Setup.exe ]

Again .. i am not too sure if it will work cos some components are in a different tre .. but worth a try

The file you got was the smart update utility that politely tries to hold your hand and download for you. The browser as one big executable is on the FTP site, find the sea directory as Static said under netscape6/pr3/

Talking

Hi Philmerrin

Calling from Canberra

Regular download would not let me in either and it took me five attempts to download from the ftp site. The ftp site seems to be the only way to download this new thing for us colonials.
I think its because we flogged them at the Paralympics.

Question

Thanks for your help, especially the link you provided Ex static cling, indeed it worked, but only after it stopped d/l partway on 3 occasions. anyhow it worked but was a whopping 21mb, just as well i got plenty of hard drive space, cool thing it didnt overwrite my 4.73 either. One odd thing has happened i jont seem to have any java software included with that whopping download. When i visit sites with applets or animations the frame is empty apart from----- plug in required click here. Which i do, i get a box explaining that components will be installed after they are downloaded. I dont get a progress bar on this, but a large ampount of amount of data does seem to flow into my PC at least 2-3mbs. Then little seems to happen for an hour, eventually the explanation box dissappears. On re-loading netscape 6, i see that the websites requiring java still have empty frames & that message. I've gone through the download plug in cycle twice. Please help someone.

Thats why I was wary about it, the integrated download might not have the components. However what you might try to do is try to get Java2 from java.sun.com
Its a shame that AOhelL is so shortsighted not to account for the world other than the Americas

Reinstall NS6 and this time choose custom setup. You should find something in there that will install Java 2. While you are in there, do NOT install the feedback agent - this is a real problem area.

Have a look in your windows/temp/ns_temp and see if you have some files starting "jre". I think the jre13.exe is the one you want. It loads something called Java Runtime. Maybe some of the others can confirm this.

Thanks for all the suggestions, the download at the java site is the same as i've tried already, and searches of my c drive dont throw up those reference to java exe etc. I even emailed the netscape technical query line, where they answer your query within 24 hours, well 60 hours later all i have is the automated reply. Guess i'll have to (attempt)a re-download from the general site. Anyone know, will i still retain my 4.73 if i re-write netscape6?
Thanks again for everyones interest.
