about this siuation?
I d/l'd Opera 7 installer and burned it to a disk on my W2K machine. I did this so I wouldn't have a long d/l time on my father-in-laws pc. He uses W98fe. When I went to My Computer and installed the disk, the pc freezes up. It won't read the disk. What did I do wrong? Carl |

Well it could be that the Win 2000 machine stored the files in the NTFS format in which case the 98Se machine would not be able to read it.

But I thought that DVD's, CD's, zips, and floppies were able to be read with any O/S. That being the case, then would the files on the CD still be NTFS format? Can Windows98 even see NTFS files?

highrisemech,
You are no doubt right. I had forgotten about that. Guess I better put Win98 back on my test pc and put a burner in it. I work on alot of W98 machines. Carl |

Hi,
Cdroms use cdfs not ntfs and floppies use fat8. The program that you downloaded may be specific to windows 2000, but it is more likely that the Win98 machine just has an older type of cdrom device which won't read your home made cdrom.

Isnt Opera 7 a Web browser...I have been daveling in the alternative browser area, just for fun, seeing what they are, and why ppl would use them...what do you think of it Kubie, is it better than IE6?
and plus, is it freeware or do you have to pay the 39 bucks for it? or is that just for the premium thing?

Opera7 is free, but if you want to get rid of the add on the top right, then you have to pay for it. I think Opera7 is better for speed, especially for dial-up users. (You have the option of turning off images to speed up even more) It also is a great ad blocker.
There are a few little strange quirks in Opera, but for the most part, it runs great.

avx487,
Since Opera 7 is out of beta, I decided to give it a try again. I like the features that allow me to change whatever I want. Ie has some of the features, but not like these. I don't have to d/l different colors or plugins to make these changes. I don't have to have a separate program to stop popups. The one ad panel that you get with the free version is small, especially with 1048X768 resolution. I mentioned to Floppyman that it is faster, again especially here at PC Mechanic. The one big change I like is how they cleaned up the Bookmarks (Favorites). Theu use to have alot of Opera stuff that was hard to remove but not anymore. You can easily Import your favorites to Opera. Hope this helps. Carl |

Well, I think I know what happened with the cd that couldn't be read.
After burning a number of free installer programs to a disk, I changed the drive letters. I had left the disc open for future additions. After I changed the drive letters on this W2K pc, I burned the Opera installer on it. Now, that is the only installer on the disk. The other 15 or so are somewhere, but they can't be read or seen on the disk now. Carl |
