dial up connection
i guess this is real simple but i don't know what it means.i have a diamond supra external serial modem,i have used it on windows 98,w2k,and xp,on w98 and w2k it shows dial up speed around 46 to 50 kbps but on xp(two different computers)it shows connection speed 115.2 kbps the actual connection speed seems about the same,what does this mean

It means that the initialization string is not set up to report modem speed - it's reporting port speed. Open the modem properties and find the "advanced" section, look for an "extra settings" box, and type this in:
S95=1 |

i guess xp just wants me to know port speed,i tried all the suggestions and still get port.when i first saw that on xp i thought the connection speed was really a lot better but soon realized it must be something different .i can get the true speed other places just didn't know what this was.anyway i learned something.thanks

S95=W2 is not a valid string!
S95=1 or W2 |

thanks glc,i just tried all three options again,booted after each one and just used w2 and still got 115.2,guess something isn't taking.one time it gave the connection speed 48kbps then reverted back,that was on the initual run and i'm not sure which setting now.

This may be an issue with the terminal server you are dialing into - or a driver issue. The builtin XP driver may not be optimum but I don't think there is an update available. I've seen this happen before with modems, but a driver update *usually* takes care of it.
A thought - have you changed the com port settings in device manager to 115200, 8, none, 1, hardware? |
