Netscape problems
Hi all,
I am having major Netscape problems. I lost all of my bookmarks and they were not retrieveable and then Netscape refused to save any new ones. The hard drive was partitioned and I didn't want it like that anymore so I decided to reformat (it had been 2 years) . I reformatted after saving on CDs anything I wanted to keep. I downloaded Netscape the newest Netsacpe 7.? (I was using it before the bookmark crash) and I still had the same problem but it wasn't just not saving bookmarks, it won't save any changes I want to make like taking away the sidebar. Each time I close the program and then reopen it , Netscape is exactly like it was new and nothing is saved. I did uninstall Netscape 7.? and download 6.? and that did not cure the problem. The mail program is working fine. If anyone can help PLEASE help me!!! It is so frustrating! Thanks, OBX |

If you copied Netscape back over from a CD backup, that's why you're having this problem.
Files on a CD of course are read only, meaning Netscape can't write to its own configuration files. Go to Program Files/Netscape and edit-select all. Then go to file-properties. Uncheck read only, and hit apply. When asked, tell it to make the change to all subfolders as well. |

I did not use a CD backup. I only saved specific files (picture etc) to CD I downloaded the Netscape program from the Netscape web site using IE after reformatting. Everything was fresh.
editing in to say... I did check Program files for Netscape and nothing was checked read only Last edited by OBX; 02-02-2003 at 05:44 PM. |

The Netscape bookmark file should be a simple HTML file that you can import.
Search your hard drive for bookmark.htm Note the dates on the files to try to find your old bookmark file that you backed up (assuming you did so), then import it. If the mail portion of Netscape is working ok as you say, that should cover everything you need. There will be an option under "edit bookmarks" or "manage bookmarks" to import the file. You should also be able to replace the bookmark.htm file under "Default" with your old one to achieve the same effect. |
