DSL Modem - problems with dual line office set up
I am trying to set up DSL in a small office that has a dual phone line. I got dual line filters for all phones, and all the phones except where the DSL modem is running are fine and have access to the two lines. However, on the phone where the DSL modem is connecting, only the primary phone line is available. I am guessing somehow the DSL modem is blocking out the second line. What do I need to do to get this resolved?
Thanks. |

Without seeing exactly how everything got wired from the demark to the phones and modem, it will be hard to give absolute answer. The DSL should only be over the 1 line, and I don't think it necesary to filter the other line that the DSL is not on, but my guess is so as to not to have to rewire everything, you just got the 2 line filters, put them in place and all is well but the 1 telset. Perhaps the phone in question inadvertantly got a 1 single line filter put in place. Check it for 4 pins all the way thru. If you look at either end and only see the 2 pins in the middle then yes it is blocking out that 2nd line..

If you are using 2-line jacks and not separate single line jacks for everything, here is how you can fix this - and it's a bit cumbersome unless a device is available that does it all.
Get an adapter that splits a 2 line jack out to separate single line jacks for Line 1 and Line 2. Let's assume the DSL is on Line 1. Plug a standard single line splitter (single line to 2 single line) into the Line 1 jack on the first splitter. Plug the DSL modem into one jack and plug a single line DSL filter into the other. Then get an adapter that combines 2 single line jacks into a single 2 line jack, plug that into the 2 open jacks you have left (the Line 2 jack on the original splitter and the jack on the DSL filter) and plug your 2 line phone into it. If the phone has separate jacks available on it for the 2 lines, you won't need the final combiner, you can just use 2 cables from the phone to the 2 jacks. This phone you are referring to, is it actually connected to a port ON the DSL modem. Was thinking about how you have described the problem, and was wondering if your dsl modem has a port for a basic phone, and if so then I would also be pretty sure that second line isn't passed thru the dsl modem.
