Somebody who has your name in their address book probably has a mass mailing worm. Are you sure your system is clean?

I had same thing, and found the sircam virus was the root cause. Found a nice little fix over at symantec's web site.

i'm positive my system is clean. it's not coming from my name, just my e-mail addy. i thought that was a little weird because my account is set up with my entire name, and i don't see why anyone that e-mails me with this account would have just my e-mail address in their book, and not my name.

Well, whether it's a Spammer spoofing your address or a friend (or friend of a friend of a friend) that is infected with Sircam of Klez or something there really is very little you can do. If you are certain your system is clean, the best you can do is contact the people in your address book that are likely to have you in theirs and see how many people you can convince to scan their systems.
Unfortunately, if it's a spammer, you are S.O.L. for the most part. You can contact your ISP, but that may end up being a dead end since many ISP's have people answering the phones that are clueless and will be unable to offer any assistance. Just to give you an idea... I get spam from myself. How cool... Check the internet header and it's coming from God knows where... only thing I can do is block their domain from my email server or somehting, but that does nothing for the thousands of people that receive emails that look like they came from me. How pleasant... |
