Yes, when you have a fax modem and fax software AND are on a dial up connection, you can sen/receive faxes.

What version of Windows do you have? A simple fax utility comes with some versions of Windows, and you can download others. They are usually set up as another printer on your PC, so when you want to fax something you print it to the "Fax" and then enter the phone number and other information.

Without a modem, you will have to use an Internet fax service, which is not free. Look at www.efax.com - but I don't know if they service Canada.

All you need is a fax/modem. Regular phone line or dedicated phone line, it doesn't matter. You can get a cheap winmodem with fax capability for next to nothing, and if you just use it to fax it shouldn't present any problems.

Win98SE does not have a built-in fax client, but the old MS Fax is buried on the CD somewhere - it's very basic but it works. Some retail box modems still come with fax software like Bitware or Quicklink - or maybe even Winfax Lite. If the PC has Office 2000 on it, there is an option to install "Symantec Fax Starter Edition" as part of Outlook.
If I'm not mistaken, the free Internet fax services are receive only, you get your faxes in your e-mail. That's how my free Efax is, to send it's a monthly fee plus a per page charge. |
