Host on my laptop?

Hi I would like to know if I can host some personal pages on my laptop. Nothing fancy just html. Maybe a Java Applet or two. I am a college student and have LAN in my dorm room. I currently dual boot XP Pro / Mandrake Linux. I was wondering if this is possible and where do I start. The pages I would be hosting would eventually be ported to a Cable connection. I am unsure whether the school has me with a static or dynamic IP.

Thanks.

Yeah, Mandrake probably already has Apache installed, read the manual at http://www.apache.org

As far as the static IP, you can check in XP by going to dos and doing a...

c:\> route print

The number that shows up most often under the "interface" column is your current IP. If it changes yours isn't static, obviously. If it is static, you're good to go just point any outside requests to your IP while running your webserver.

Note the actual address though, your university might not be giving you a public IP address.

If your address starts with 192, 10, or 172, those won't be visible to anyone on the outside world, just within the campus network.
