How are you connected to the net? Broadband or dial-up?
If dial-up, then I suggest that you go directly to the Microsoft site and download your updates from there. In my experience, a windows update on dial-up rarely works. http://microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/default.asp

Mine was screwed up a couple weeks ago - I turned on the allow automatic updates and they all took - so I turned it off and it's been fine since.

Windows Update requires some services to be running to work properly, did you disable any services recently?

Thanks for the link Aym,
I enabled automatic updates and that worked, but before I did that I went to Microsoft's site and tried to update manually... no luck, I got to the "Accept" screen and it just hung. I let it sit there for 1/2 hour and nothing happens. I'm thinking something could be wrong with my browser??? any suggestions? I want to be able to update manually ! |

I am on dial up and have successfully updated often. I have found that if I update one or two files at a time, depending on the size it will go smoother for me. Some files require restarts and some don't. Some need to be d'loaded by themselves. I try to do "like" types together. Also when I update it is the only thing I have open/active.

I had a similar problem once. Go to M/S knowledge base and do a search for your problem. I had a corrupt file in my update folder and had to remove it before the update would start working again.

Windows Update requires something to be installed the first time you use it, is this enabled in IE's advanced options?
Look for "enable software install" or something similar and check it. |

Thanks for all your help everyone but I could not get it to work so I re-installed (which is what I was hoping not to do) and that solved the problem.
