Appreciate some assistance.
Helping someone who is running Internet Explorer v.5.00 (5.00.2919.6304) and is having some problems. The Dial-Up-Connection prompt sometimes keeps coming up, no matter whether or not a connection to the Internet is needed, and no matter how many times you cancel the bugger. Any suggestions? |

Why not upgrade your version?

Take a look in startup, and msconfig. Something is trying to access the internet.

Some versions of Zone Alarm want Internet access following a reboot.
Call me old-fashioned, but when I had dialup, I had my Internet connection options set to "never dial a connection" and I had a shortcut to my dialup in the quick launch toolbar - and manually established the connection when *I* wanted - not when something else wanted. Even with PPPoE DSL (which is what I have now) I manually connect after a reboot. I just don't see the need to have IE trigger the dialer, no offense, but that's just laziness and a remnant of the AOL mentality. It's only 2 extra mouse clicks to get on line and 2 extra clicks to disconnect. |

Thanks for the replies.
Was thinking about doing something with IE also, however, don't know if version 5.0 has to be totaly uninstalled thru CP before installing IE 6.0 (have CD For IE 6.0). Will check MSConfig, and on IE setting: 'Never dial a connection'. If that is what it takes to fix it, the folks who own the PC (senior citizens) will have no problems with that. |

If you install a firewall program like Sygate Personal it will tell you whenever a program is trying to access the web.

Thanks much for the suggestion.
Thought about a firewall, but these folks are rather frugal. Would have the heck of a time trying to convince them to get a firewall program. They do not understand any of the security jargon. Need to find a way to solve the issue without involving their wallet. |

Sygate and ZoneAlarm are free downloads. No charge at all.

I recommend Sygate since ZA has started annoying the users with annoying messages.

Hmmmm. Thanks for the info.
Went to a website for Sygate, but saw a fee. Must have gone to the wrong place. |

Do not uninstall IE5 - if you are going to install IE6, leave 5 because if they have Win98, the odds are 50/50 that IE6 is gonna suck, and it's easy to revert if you leave what's there alone.
Easiest thing to do is leave IE alone, just make sure it's got all the security patches, and give them a shortcut to their dialup, set IE to never dial, and show them how to connect and disconnect manually. |

Thanks for the info, glc.
How would one find out whether or not the security patches are installed for IE v 5.0? Thanks force_flow2002 for the link to Sygate firewall. |

Just go to Windows Update and get all the critical updates except for IE6 SP1.
