Angry IE 6 Having problems with .gif images.

I've looked for answers to this problem a lot of different places but maybe someone here can help. Every since I applied SP1 to Win XP , Internet Explorer has been having trouble displaying .gif images at times. Either I get a red X or nothing at all.

I've tried the following:

clearing out my temporary internet files
renaming my Hosts file
verifying that all of the correct multimedia settings are checked
verifying that all of my image file associations are correct
making sure that my encoding is set to auto-select and western european
lowering my security settings
uninstalling ad-aware
uninstalling and reinstalling Norton Internet Security
and finally reinstalling IE 6

None of these has worked. Does anyone have any other ideas. Short of doing a reformat and reinstall of windows I can't think of anything else to do.

Thanks
