Preventing Access to certain site using IE6
How do I prevent someone from going to a particular site? All I want is to restrict one site only. I tried using Advisory content but everytime I try to access other sites it always asking me for a password to be approve when all I want is to restrict one site only.
Thanks

Thinking about this - putting it into the Restricted Zone won't block access.....but maybe if you redirect that site to 127.0.0.1 in the hosts file, that will take care of it.

I was trying to do this too, so your timing is great!
However, I tried the HOSTs trick, and it wouldn't work for me. I am trying it on a computer running Win2000 Pro, and IE 6. There are two hosts files on the HDD: C:\I386\HOSTS C:\WinNT\System32\Drivers\Etc I don't know why there was one in I386 (or even what that folder is - could be put there by IBM?) However, I put the site, redirected to 127.0.0.1 into both HOSTS files and it still doesn't work. Doing exactly the same thing on another machine running Win98FE works fine and blocks access. Any idea what I might try? Thanks, David. Last edited by David_Jones; 03-12-2003 at 06:02 PM. |

Copy one of the hosts files you modified into a directory that's in the path - like c:\winnt.

David - you've probably modified the HOSTS.SAM file in the C:\WinNT\System32\Drivers\Etc. Rename it to HOSTS - it's in the right place. The I386 folder you've got is where the W2K install files are. Check the format:
127.0.0.1 www.bannerspace.com ## |

I got it. It's on internet tools>internet options>content>enable>approved sites(type in site address)>click never>general tab>check user can see site that have no rating and unchec supervisor can type in password.....
this will restrict sites that you don't want to be viewed Thanks |

Hi,
The file was HOSTS not HOSTS.SAM (the .sam file is just the sample file I believe). I'll try adding the etc folder to the path and see whether than helps. I was somewhat suprised to find that DOS environment variables still appear in Win2000. I though DOS was dead in that OS! Do I need those two hashes at the end of each line? Thanks, David. |

Hi All,
I had some time, so I thought I'd return to this issue. It still isn't working for me under Win2000. I have tried with and without the hashes. Any other ideas? David. |

It has to be named "HOSTS" with no extension.
If you saved it as a text file or word file or whatever, it won't work. |

Hi Xayd,
I checked again, and it is definately HOSTS with no extension (no txt, sam, doc or anything else). Typical that something so simple in Win98 has to be stuffed for me in Win2000! David. |
