I've got a wierd problem with IE5. I can clear history files within the tools menu or clear within the win explorer window. But when I open IE back up & click on the history tab, everything I have ever went to shows up! I've searched for hidden files & everything I can think of with no luck! Any suggestions?

Upgrade to 5.5. It cured a lot of problems and it's faster too.

In IE5, if you click on the history button then look through the history items you can delete individual entries by right clicking and selecting delete. Not sure if this is what you wanted but I hope it helps.

From a DOS reboot, type deltree windows\history (ENTER of course!) and reboot into windows. The history folder will be recreated with a new index, which is what's causing your problem.

Thanks Ron, but I had already tried upgrading. I still had the same problem. Thanks Chris, I had tried deleting them one by one, but it would not let me delete them. Thanks Rambler, I tried what you suggested & it deleted nearly all of them. It did leave a few items there that I had not visited in months though! Any ideas on why?

It left some? But you've just deleted the folder, index an' all! That's weird (spelt "weird" pronounced "microsoft").

I was thinking as the history function is not working properly it might be time to try the repair option if you haven't already done so.

Well I've tried everything I can think of to repair or delete. If you have any more suggestions I'm open to them. If I remember right this all started when the old pc crashed one weekend & I didn't know it until tues. It was being left on since I was hooked up to a cable modem. Since then other wierd things have been happening too. Thanks to everyone for the help!

Depending upon what version of Windows you're running, why not try TWEAKUI FOR WINDOWS.
It has a feature that will let you clear history at boot up. But you can play with it by turning it off and on to get it to clear only when you want it to. |
