Basic Firewall Question
Hi all,
I was checkup up on firewall protection recently and wanted to get mine tested so I did or so I think. I have no firewall except the basic one provided in Windows XP Pro for my dial-up connection. I ran a test and it looks genuine (apachesystems.com) and it says I have a VERY GOOD firewall and that I am operating under stealth on every port. Is the basic firewall I have really that good? or am i being mislead...? Thanks

You are being mislead.
XP only protects one way. I don't remember if it's the outgoing or incoming transmissions it blocks, but it's far from being the protection you need. You better get a true firewall like Sygate or Kerio.

xp only protects incoming traffic. Sygate,Tiny Personal Firewall, or ZoneAlarm will do it for you.

Thanks you guys. I have a couple more questions if you could answer please that would be great! How big of a download are those firewalls? Also what is the point to having a firewall that blocks outgoing (what is it blocking)?
Thanks again |

You are using a DIALUP. Hardware and Software Firewalls are only recommended for high speed Broadband users (always connected setup). I don't think you need Firewall. What you need is a good AV and AdAware Utilities. XP built in Firewall is enough for you, but if you are still worried about your security, Sygate Personal Firewall is good and it does get to much of your bytes.

Ok thanks, I do have dial up but in a few months ill be getting a beefy ethernet connection so I am prepping my PC. I downloaded sygate and it is pretty darn cool. My other question, "what is the point to having a firewall that blocks outgoing (what is it blocking)?" remains...

There are lot's of reasons why you Block it. Here is a link.
It's self explanotory: http://www.networkmagazine.com/artic...G20020803S0006 As for me as long as I don't let my Microsoft Explorer goes out when my Firewall ask for a permission. I let Sygate do the rest of the job. |
