research question about win98 and IE 6

Lately at work, I have been hearing alot about how win98 fe/se does not work well with IE 6.0. Is there any truth to that. People are saying that IE is truly meant for win 2000 and win XP only that all other OS are use at your own risk.

this became a quesiton for me last night, as I was trying to help a customer. He thought the Firewall we provide(in the router) was preventing him from downloading files from the net. Other Agents had trouble shot the firewall, when I got ahold of the problem, I knew it was not the firewall, he could surf and email just fine. I took remote control access of his computer and I noticed when I clicked a link to download a file the SAVE AS window did not come up. but in the left lower corner of IE it said downloading from www.adsfasfadsf.com/filename.exe
then I right clicked on the link then save target as then it downloaded a 6 meg file in 1 second reported, I knew then it had already downloaded the file into temporary place, however I could not file them by searching for the file name.

I effectively got it to the point I know it is the IE 6 or win98SE OS that is having the problem, believe me, I checked every single setting in IE, restored defaults, repaired IE, run SFC. The only thing i managed to prove it was not the firewall

Also I checked, he had no type of download manager I could fine, He had a new Norton Antivirus fully updated, no firewalls on his PC. he had a super connection to the internet because the remote control access of his computer was almost like me sitting at his computer. We were getting no error messages.

At the end of the call my only suggestion was to recommended he try another broswer like netscape(I managed to get the installer downloaded to his desktop), uninstall IE 6.

That was beat me last night because I could not fine anything wrong that I could thing of that might cause his problem.

That's a tough one byte, I know some people run it on Win98 without any troubles at all while others including myself have all kinds of troubles with it.

It seems to be a 50/50 shot, wether it will work OK or not.
I find that IE6 does work on a fresh(er) install, than one that is 6 months or more old. No telling what settings get messed in 6 months to cause it to not work though.

I have a customer that's running in a mixed 98/98se/2k environment - and all of the 98 machines that were upgraded to IE6 have been giving a lot of grief. Rolling them back to 5.01/5.5 has fixed every one of them. The 2k machines run fine with IE6 as do about half of the 98se machines.
