Which is Faster IE5.5 or IE6

I'm using Windows 98 on a 266mhz and installed IE6 a few days ago and it seems slower. Is there any truth to that.

Yup. Newer browser requires more horsepower.
Expecially on Win98. IE 5.5 is the highest I would go.
On XP IE 6 SP1 easily, if you have the hardware to run it.

Ran into the same thing, not just on a 266Mhz cpu but also a 466 and also a 525. Even on my current system that also has win98 on it I use IE5.5 instead of 6. Well actually I use Mozilla/Phoenix, but when I do use IE it's version 5.5

Doesn't seem to matter. If you're running Win98, stick with IE 5.5
Too many people are having trouble with IE 6 on Win98.

I'm running 5.5 upgraded to 6 (on Win98 1.2MHz T/Bird) with no problems; however, as with previous versions of IE, it always seems a lottery whether individual systems will work well with an upgrade. 50% of people seem to have no problems and the other 50% have nightmares.

In the past, I would only upgrade my IE version when I made a clean Windows install every year. That seemed to work very well. I think there's still something to be said for installing IE to a pristine Windows install.

I'm running IE 5.5 on Win98, I don't want to upgrade to IE 6 because I see no point, I have another computer that run's on Windows XP Pro w/ IE 6 and I see almost no difference. I'm happy with 5.5 right now, no problems.

Is there a sure-fire way to completely uninstall IE? I got 5.0 with the 98se install, upgraded to 6.0. I have the 5.5 cd and would rather use it.

I guess it depends on what OS your running. I had IE 6 with my Win98se and I found it to hang a lot and other small problems. I switched back to IE 5.5 and now it flys and fewer problems. I'm much happier now.

Sarge - uninstall 6, it will revert it back to 5.01 then you can use your CD.

Done, and thanks. Only thing I dislike about 5.5 is there is no check box to "disable 3rd party cookies".

I had mad problems on 98se after upgrading to ie6 too.
Now i use a win2000pro pc for games.
I just heard that for games like NHL 2003, or 3dmark03 and so, i need IE6.

Are there any of these problems when upgrading 2000 to ie6? the pc doesnt have internet so i dont actually use the program itself. but id rather not play those games than risking to mess up my windows again.

BTW about the cookies thingie, maybe try mozilla, it has pretty much every setting you might want, (from whom to accept em, how long to store em, ...)
