I ran across this today in a collage advertisement saying that they have it. I remember hearing that it was "in development" a while back. What exactly is it?

from what i have read. It is basically a high speed version of the internet. It is supposed to be capable of extremely high bandwidth in the hundereds of megabits. they have been using it to break records lately in transfering large files.

They were saying it was faster than standard internet connections...
Just how fast, though? |

Supposedly, I2 was gonna be available *only* to academic, military and scientific institutions, and not to the consumer marked. At least in its initial stages. This to avoid the tons of spam and comercial ads.

What, so it's isolated from the rest of the net?

Here is the article..
" 923 megabits per second for 58 seconds...that's about 3,500 times faster than a typical Internet broadband connection. " It is currently still in development by universities. [edit] Here is the article about FAST protocol, which is likely to be used in I2. " 8,609 megabits per second by using 10 simultaneous flows of data over routed paths." Oh...dear .Then I will be downloading stuff from AaZaK faster than ever.. I just need a bigger HDD.

It's just normal internet, just faster. In P2P, your speed will be limited by other users without I2. You also have to remember that at those speeds, your computer itself will be the bottleneck.

That is crazy! So, would it be faster to load a page than to open a word document?

You can always use XML instead of the .doc format in Word.

Arnt they going to need fiber optic cable for I2? I remember hearing something like that...
Imagine how much those network cables would cost....sheesh...

not too much. i own some fiber optic cables (they are short) and cost about 40 bucks each. I know they will charge outrageous prices at first...
