Cookies

I lost my password for a site the other day and when I entered my email address to receive my pass I got a message saying cookies need enabling. Well they are enabled but this still happens. I also get problems on a few web sites that refuse to carry out a search. I am sure this has only happened since downloading windows sp's.
I have set up to receive all cookies but can't get any joy.
Any ideas please?

I had the same problem a while ago. I'm using WinXP Pro. I think that you might be using Xp as well. What I found was that I needed to reinstall XP. Actually, I just needed to do a reinstall/repair of IE6, but I am unable to do this with XP. So, I did a reinstall and the whole system worked fine afterwards. If this is your case, you might want to give it a try.

Hope this helped?!

I wouldn't suggest a reinstallation of the O/S yet.

A repair on IE may be a start, though.

btw, do you have any firewalls up besides XP's firewall?

I might be wrong with this, but I didn't think you could do a repair of IE when running XP. When I had this problem, origianlly I was looking to repair IE as well, but was reading through some posts somewhere and read that you cannot do this. After looking deeper into this, I was not able to find any way to do this (not any normal way anyway). I know that IE6 SP1 is out, and possibly this will allow you to do this, but from what I was reading, XP will not function properly without IE, and for that reason it is unable to be uninstalled or repaired the way it used to be able to and for this reason the OS needs to be reinstalled. Please, if I am wrong in any way, let me know so that I can avoid this hassle in the future as well. Thanks for any further advice you might have for me!

Hmm...
Can't say I've actually tried an IE repair in XP...
Now that you mention it, IE6 doesn't appear in add/remove progs...
In that case, then I believe the only option would be to upgrade to IE6 SP1.

Check the time and date on your PC. I had the same problem a few weeks back on a friend's pc. When I corrected the date and cleared the cookies, the problem vanished.

Also, if you want to run the repair tool in XP...try this:

From the Start menu, choose Run.

In the Run window, type rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

Note: The command is case-sensitive.

Click the OK button.

Click the Repair Internet Explorer option.

Click the Yes button to complete the repair.

Thanks for the replies. Sorry couldn't answer until now. Yes I am using XP and Norton Firewall. I had disabled the firewall with the same results. I have now found that I have to disable the firewall and then in tools- internet options - advanced - restore defaults everything is Ok. When I enable the firewall I have to do the same again.
