Help! Bad popup when i open Explorer!
I've been having this problem for a few days now and I have no idea why. Whenever I turn on my computer and open up Internet Explorer, this porn site that takes up the whole screen (there are no scrollbars or "X" to close the window) pops up. I have to hit the windows button on my keyboard to get to the taskbar and close the site. After I close the site, more porn popups come. What is going on? I've tried running a Spybot program, clearing my history/cookies/temp files, but nothing works. Can anyone help me? Thanks!

Before opening IE, go to internet options (through the Control Panel) and see what your homepage is set as and if it's the porn site, see if it will allow a change.

Also try a pop-up blocking program such as pop-up blocker from www.panicware.com

Run msconfig and see what's running at startup. Often, it's a programs that runs on startup.

Try clearing out your temp files too.

The popup is still there... I tried to get the site's address and block it, but a different site now pops up, also taking up the whole screen (no scrollbars of "X" to close the window). I think it's a different site everytime. I'm pretty sure it's a program, but I can't find it anywhere. I also got a popup blocker and it blocks the site that come up after I close the "main" site (the one that takes up the whole screen), but the "main" site still goes through and is still opens... Why doesn't it block the site that takes up the whole screen? Please help!

Would reinstalling windows get rid of this problem?
It happens only once a day and only when I open up Internet Explorer. If i shut down or restart my computer on the same day, it doesn;t happen anymore... Could it be that Explorer is messed up? Is there a way to reinstall Internet Explorer? Thanks |

When you deleted temp files did you also delete windows temp files? There has to be something running on the machine to cause this since popup stopper doesn't catch the first one.
Did you check in msconfig? Run an updated anti-virus? Have you updated Spybot? What OS are you using? You can go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, highlight Internet Explorer, click to remove it then select the repair option. If your using Windows XP, I think this procedure is different, maybe someone will come along and verify that, I am not at my XP machine to be sure. |

I use the below free software (it works). It's a "start page guard" that prevents what you're experiencing. Best to get rid of the trash first but try this anyway. I have it on all 4 pcs.

Ok.. up untill now, i've been opening Internet Explorer first thing after i turn on my computer and a porn site pops up. Today, I tried to look in My Computer first to check it out, but when I clicked on it, that thing( site/program) poped up! It seems this thing isn't only with Internet Explorer, but all programs activates this... Any suggestions?
By the way, I already have that startpage guard and a popup blocker and they aren't working... |

ChangoMan, have you tried the suggestions above? You haven't given anybody a clue as to what OS you're running or any steps taken....

At this link click download, get it and run it. Alot of folks around these parts use it and it works. (It's free) http://security.kolla.de/ Then, for good measure get this other freebie: http://www.lavasoft.de/software/adaware/ Last edited by SARGE; 04-22-2003 at 10:44 PM. |

I have tried almost all the suggestions. I ran msconfig, but I have no idea what to look for. Everything seemed normal... I've looked in all my folders for suspicious looking files, but couldn't find any.
I have Windows XP by the way (sorry for the confusion). |

Hi ChangoMan,
In msconfig, check in the Startup Folder and see what's running on startup. The reason I mention this is a friend of mine had the same problem and it was a program that installed itself on his computer and would run on startup. You problem sounds just like the one he had. Hopefully you recognize each program in the startup list, like your anti-virus program and the like. If there is a program or two you don't recognize, then you could post them here to see if the forum can ID them. Or, you could disable them to see if it fixes the problem. You can always turn them back on if needed. TwoRails |

The anti virus program is Norton AntiVirus 2003. I'll try running that lavasoft program Sarge mentioned and mess around with msconfig and see what happens. Thanks for all the advice!

Good news everyone! After running that lavasoft program, I couldn't open up my Kazaa shareware. I reinstalled Kazaa and the popups stopped! It probably had something to do with Kazaa. So far the problem has stopped! Thanks for everyone's help!!!!!

Glad you got it worked out! Yeah, when using Ad-Aware you have to leave the cydoor entries alone or Kazaa won't work.

I would run an anti virus check, then if you havent got it go and download spybot search and destroy and for pop ups I use POW,its a little free popup killer that you can get from analogx.com.
