If you want to disable Java programs from running click on Tools/ Internet Options/ Security Tab/ Click on Custom Level then scroll down to Microsoft VM/ Java permission then check the box Disable Java. then click okay. That's it.

More to the point -- why would you want to?

Get rid of popup banners, stupid floating images that take forever to load, etc. I rarely surf with javascript on, only turn it on for sites that are unusable without it, and even then only if I really need to get into the site for whatever reason.

well i just disabled java, but i still get the annoying pop-ups! What gives? It's easy to get rid of them with Netscape, but i can't seem to do it with IE.

You need to disable JavaScript (as in, the scripting language) not JAVA (as in,the Java Virtual Machine which handles applets).

In previous versions I believe it was under security settings, hit the security tab in internet options and try "custom level".

This is coming from a Netscape person, though, so if I'm wrong I plead ignorance .

You might be interested in a web filter I use, which will do what you want without disabling Jscript, and results in faster surfing and improved security all round. Yesterday it popped up a little window which said "Attention! Someone is trying to get in! View log file for more info.". This was a feature I didn't even know it had!

It's free, uses few resources, will selectively block ads, cookies, kills "nosey" jscripts, etc. And can be readily customised. I have added a few functions to automatically supply userid and password for some sites I sign on to regularly. I swear by it - Proxomitron - see http://proxomitron.cjb.net/
