Anybody ever buy software on these auctions? I'm seeing PageMaker a $600 program for $10-50. What's the deal? Is it an FBI sting to catch people who buy pirated software?

I have purchased some software from auctions, it is usually an older version or sometimes old DSP( Dealer Service Pack) software for bundling with a system. When the DSP stuff gets beyond a certain age it outlives it's usefulness. Most DSP and some older version software has no tech support either. Never heard of any type of sting for buyers though, have heard of several for sellers.

tech support

Thank you for a reply. Your answers eased my indecision. I don't have a problem with no tech support & older versions. I've always been able to locate an online FAQ or a users' forum for the better known software. Far as version? long as it does what I need.

I bought PageMaker from the Yahoo auction. I'll let y'all know how it goes (after installation).

If you see several copies offered in the same ad. at a ridiculously low price, they're pirated. Beware, the authorities (prompted by software houses) are beginning to follow up on these ads., especially on auction sites. Some prosecutions (sellers AND websites) are already under way here in UK.

TY for warning

Your suggestion to look at how many copies I see on the auction is a good suggestion.

Not always, if they are DSP's it just means they overbought by that much or some clearing house is trying to dump old stuff. A lack of contact information and the lack of credit card payments( leaves a trail) is usually a better sign of pirates.
