Still tweaking my modem and discovered a weird setting: My modem properties shows it is using COM3 but I do not show a COM3 in Device Manager, only COM1 and COM2. What gives with this? Could this cause high latency in connections?
Thanks

Nothing strange about that. A winmodem (aka soft modem) will take a "virtual" port, that does NOT exist on the system board, thus it's not listed under Ports in device manager.
If it works, don't fix it. The latency you're experiencing is due to it being a winmodem and relying on your CPU to do all the work. Open a game (CPU intensive) and there's nothing left to run the modem. Can cause spontaneous reboots/shutdowns as well. |

Thanks Reboot,
That solves that. I honestly didn't know it was a winmodem. From what I've read, that sounds the deathknell on my on-line gaming until I go cable! |
