I have a small question regarding website design. But I want to digress for a second or two.
While designing my website, I thought it would be a good idea to include a time and date on my page. Cool. HOLD on, what is the purpose of this ? To show off my java skills, well, actually my skills at stealing other peoples java. Who needs a clock on a webpage ? As the saying goes, A man with two watches never knows what time it is. My question is: Why is having a button labelled "CLICK HERE" on a website regarded as bad practise ? I`m sure the answer is obvious, but I need clarification, because a lot of people seem to adhere to this idea but hardly any of them explain why. |

Over use, redundancy...we're just sick of seeing "click here", and "(insert name here)'s homepage".
Along with a few others: "Under Construcion"...DUH! If it's not under construction, then you obviously don't EVER do any updates. Popups that require the viewer to push the OK button are a REAL no no, along with background music that can't be turned off easily. If ya gotta have a clock, check out my time server. ![]() If ya gotta have music, use an interface like Crescendo's. (Yes, there's java or DHTML for all of this.) A much better idea is a small web bot that mentions the last time the page was updated. Put it near the top, and when people revisit, they'll have a better idea if there's any new content. |

Hmm there are a variety of reasons why a time included on a webpage is a good idea sometimes... mind you I dont condone script kiddies & HUGE applets for telling U what is probably already known.. for example if you were running an e-commerce site located in California & had shipping policies that were time bound .. might be a good idea to have a time scripted to your timezone for customers to verify their time of order. A website is supposed to be functional .. am sure that there are loads of functions for a clock
![]() Re: a button is a bad idea ?? Hmm i suppose it conceals the URL that u are redirecting a client to... its akin to have a crazy little statusbar display text that keeps scrolling about! |

I might include a poll on my website asking visitors should I include a clock, a scrolling staus bar, pop up buttons. How about one of those pop up windows that fill the whole screen and don`t give you any option but the 3 finger salute (ctrl+alt+del).
I think I get the "Click Here" argument, I suppose its a redundant statement, like "Hit refresh to refresh the page" or "Take that knife out of my neck, it will kill me". Lets start a topic off, where everyone posts the things that they hate most about websites. Me first. I hate when people start topics asking for peoples opinions, thus attracting a huge response, clogging up a forum, that might otherwise be helping someone in real need. |

Sometimes what is obvious to us is not so to others, therefore "click here"

Mhayes . Your " click here" isn't working. You need to brush it up. I'll check back later, and see if it work or not.
