Also, is WAR FTP Daemon software I can use to put a server for other people to access my hard drive? What else do I need to make this possible? Thanks. |

Thanks for the links. I followed the guys recommendations and went to look for info on the difference between clients and servers. I had that concept fairly well understood.
Now can you confirm this info? In order to run a server I have to have a permanent connection? If this is true then I can't do it with 56K? Bummer. My whole intention was to allow family members to access pictures from my server. They also have 56k. Thanks. |

You don't have to have a permanent connection, but they have to know your IP address, which changes every time you connect. It would be a LOT less hassles if you used AIM or ICQ and set it up for filesharing, I assume M$N Messenger and Yahoo Messenger would be capable of this too, but I can't confirm that because I don't use them. This is easiest because they don't have to know your IP, all they have to do is see your name in their list and connect. With AIM, all they have to do is right click on your name and choose Get File. ICQ is similar - right click on your name, file, shared files, browse and get files.
Running a FTP server and having your relatives try to figure out how to use a client is the hard way to do it. It's a lot easier using IM, you can even send them the files you want them to have that way, they don't even have to do anything except accept them. Last edited by glc; 05-10-2003 at 07:37 PM. |

Thanks for all this info. I don't know much about IM or ICQ. I know I have about 30MB with yahoo and I can use "Briefcase" for public sharing. I imagine IM and ICQ may be something similar.
