Spam Control

A friend of mine is receiving 200 spams a day now. He has a boat load of mail rules but 30+ spams are still getting thru. We came up with a couple of OE rules that looks like it will filter it all out.

First we created a "Friend & Family" folder, then created 2 rules.

Rule #1 - Where from line contains people, (everyone in addressbook) COPY to specified folder. In this case "Friends & Family" folder
Rule #2 - For all messages , Delete (meaning all incoming messages)

Originally rule 1 was set up to MOVE, but we found only COPY works. So while ALL incoming emails are sent to Deleted folder, copies from those listed in your addressbook are saved to "Friends & Family" folder.

As the addressbook grows, rule #1 will have to be modified to include those new addresses.

Eat THAT spammers.

Hmm, but as I understand it, you won't be able to receive any mail except from your family members.

For example, if I send you a mail it will be deleted.

Yeah, that's the downside. Actually, the email goes to the Deleted folder. So as long as you don't empty the Delete folder on exit all incoming email is still retained.
You could still wade thru the Deleted folder it at your leasure.

Granted, this method is not for everyone. But my friend was to the point that it's either this or get another email address.

Have you tried Mailwasher already?

www.mailwasher.net

It's a very good program that lets you see what's on the server before you download anything. Thus you can delete the spam and download only the important mails.

Update

Thanks again for the Mailwasher url. It's shaping up to be a God send for both my friend and my Aunt Bobbie. She too was considering a new email address due to the 400+ spams a day (on a dial-up connection no less ..... brutal).

Took Aunt Bobbie's spam control a step further by encoding the email address posted on her web sites (family geneology). This, as I understand it, fools those address sniffing spybots. Browsers can still read the code as an email address, but spybots pass it by (until they get smarter anyway)

This is where we encoded her email address
