Web Filterting/child protection
I'm getting ready to put my daughter's computer on the internet and am doing research on filtering software.
From what I've been able to find so far, the software seems to be designed around "exclusion". i.e. limit certain sites from being seen. Since my daughter is 3.5, I'd like to find something that is built on "inclusion". I get to pick the sites she sees. Does anyone know of a way to do this? Thanks in advace. |

You could probably accomplish that with IE by using the security settings and content advisor...

Here is my opinion about it and you are probably not going to like it. If your child is unsupervised on the Internet, I don't think any security program will keep her from sooner or later coming upon a sex site.
Many times those people use neutral names for their web sites or they use popular names that are misspelled. They have many other ways of getting around such security. They push their Internet marketing tricks further than anyone else because they don't care what happens since they are either in a foreign country or on some island where they know the law can't get to them though some parents might. The social implications of this on today's youth is like that of no other time in the modern history of this planet except for certain people who continue to live like neanderthals and certain extremist groups like on the Island of Mangaia and certain extreme Hindu sects in India. |

Right on. I totally agree. Some of you may have not noticed, but Internet, expecially email, has become a waste of time, rather than productive.

Yeah, I agree. Although filtering software does help for many sites, it is better to just monitor her internet usage. I would still recommend getting filter software though, as we all know its impossilbe to be there all the time.

I agree, there is no replacement for education and supervision -- i.e. being a parent.
My need is really more to the point that at three years old, she ends up accidentally leaving the site and gets frustrated. For the short term, I'm going to set up shortcuts to the sites she likes and put buttons on the desk top for her to use. Thanks for the responses. |
