Block ads, popups, and spyware...for nine bucks a month

I have been seeing some ads for www.proxyconn.com lately, promising "DSL speeds over dialup," so I had to check out exactly what kind of snake oil they were peddling.

For only $9 a month, they will block popups, ad banners, and most spyware (funny, I thought I could do this stuff for free). And their "proprietary" software will give you faster speeds. According to them, "On average you should expect up to 5x faster browsing speed*.

*Speed of service, uninterrupted and error-free service is not guaranteed."

I wonder why there is a disclaimer there.

The sad part is the number of people that will actually fall for this. Not knowing that the services they offer can be done for free.

I cant stand when they say you can try something for free but give us your credit card information.... Doesn’t sound to free....

I was under the impression that it was some kind of caching program. It would store the information on your computer and instead of downloading the images it would retrieve it from your hard drive...

But hell if the NY Times says it’s good.... It must be...

It could be worse, we have VP at our company that see this and then go, "how come we don't have that?"

They claim the browsing speed, because they use a proxy, so stuff comes from their proxy server, instead of realtime from it's source. This has long been one of AOL's tricks.
