Pissed &*#@*&%* Popup ads - Help

Those aggravating popups used to be a bit annoying, and did not occur all that much, but now they have multiplied, interfered with viewing or reading web sites, message boards, and have frozen my system, making me have to shut down just to get rid of them.

I have Windows 98, mostly use Netscape 4.76, but have downloaded Netscape 7.0. I also have IE 5.0 installed, it came with the computer, and using that causes the worst of the problems.

Why do I use 3 browsers. Preferred the 4.76, which I use 80% of the time. Some sites tho come garbled, so have to use IE for them. Downloaded 7.0 hoping all problems would be solved, and tho I like it, the problems remained. PLUS, for some reason it does not have Java or something (needed for some game sites).

Is there one or two popup killers that work the best with my browsers?
Would appreciate any help.

Go to http://security.kolla.de and download Spybot Search and Destroy - you gotta have some malware in there to cause that much grief.

Thanx so much, but I cannot find anything on that site that says it works with Netscape. It mentions IE a lot. I tried all different sections, and the site won't let me even ask the question. (Tried the "contact" several times, after checking the news, FAQs, support, knowledge, etc. areas.

No, Spybot is a program you install to scan your computer for malware, it's not a popup stopper.

Here's My 2 Cents

I use both Ad Aware and Spybot S&D. I think that both of those problems compliment each other nicely. If the popups are that bad, you should use one or both of these programs to scan/clean your computer fo any spyware or adware.

After using those two programs to scan and clean your computer, Pop-UP Stopper is a good popup killer to catch those stray popups that seem to come with some websites...

(BTW if you have never used a program like Ad Aware or Spybot, you might be surprised to find out just how much spyware/adware is on your machine)

Here are the links:

Ad Aware: http://www.lsfileserv.com/index.html

SpyBot: http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=news

Pop Up Stopper: http://www.panicware.com/index.html

A boss of mine was having trouble with his home machine, pop ups, system crashes etc. He asked if I could have a look at it and install office and win xp on it.

I purchased both from newegg and had him bring the box in. He then told me that he wanted win 2k removed and win 98 left on as he "did not have all the disks anymore" for some of the software that win98 used. Not being one to lecture myself out of a job I said sure....... I pictured a couple of partitions, wipe one, run a couple of spybot/adaware, and an install......

Well, first off, ONE partition with win2k and win98 on it! Kazaa full version..... I install adaware and let it rip. 307 items, I do the same with spybot, another bunch (I did not bother rememebring the number) reran both and each found another 20-30 on the second run, unistalled Kazza (all the way down to the registry), and installed office XP. I still have the win XP disk, I figured three OS's on one partition was two too many.

On my retunring the box to him he told me a friend installed the win2k and that is when the problems started, but it got worse after kazaa........ It runs as good as you expect with two OS's on one partition. Now he wants me to build him a new box that is wireless network capable....

You can't go wrong with SpyBot and Ad-Aware. Also, download and install the Google toolbar. That will help stop popups on certain sites that have it written into their code.

hey you can try this:

endpopups.com

this is what i use, it worked really well. It'll let a few ads go by, but they aren't annoying. If your willing to have a little bar on the bottom left corner of your browser, it's a good popup thingy. ya...i like it.

hopefully, this is what your asking for i think. i just skimmed over your post

It may be an old thread, but the problem is still new to many.
