Anyone tried the new, free version? I'm using it now and seems nice for a change of pace. It's a speedy rascal.

Now that it's free, it's definitely worth getting.

Yeah, but the free version is powered by adware. You still gotta pay $39 to get rid of that.

Transfer Favorites to Opera.
Click on HOTLIST to open left hand pane. Open the bookmarks by right clicking bookmarks. In the left hand bookmarks pane, click on bookmarks to highlight it. Now right click it, choose file, choose insert internet explorer favorites, a windows will open with a browse box with C;\windows\favorites, now choose ok. All your Internet Explorer Favourites will appear in Opera Browser. |

You can get rid of the banner -select 'full screen' from 'view'. Sucker gets a bit too FULL if anything. Get back the toolbar by right clicking in the upper screen area and de select it.You can move back and forward same way in full screen.

F11 works the same way as the other browsers in switching to/from full screen. Full screen is not something I've used too much in the past but that could change.
There's a whole bunch of options with a right click. X to go forward and Z to go back. Haven't played with it to much yet so I can't really say whether it is faster, better, etc. ... so far so good.

Not bad at all, I especially like the zoom feature and its speed. A few drawbacks though, Opera will not run some java scripts (even with the java add on) and bookmarks on Blink.com do not seem to work with it.
Ut oh , two other anamolies: Pricewatch.com does not work with Opera, and after I posted this original message and came back to edit it, the message did not show up on Opera but did on Netscape. [Edited by Prader Willi on 12-16-2000 at 07:50 AM] |

More than you wanted to know....
Op 5.01 (quick run down)
1) proves that 4.0x was nothing more than a beta released as a final so that the "free" version would be a version 5 and sound more current. Op 4.02 was so much slower than 3.62 it drove me to mo 0.6! 5.01 is, once again, the fastest full-featured browser available. 2) security is excellant; check http://www.opera.com/opera5/operaini.html for great hacks to the .ini file. It does lack the nice toolbar access of mo 0.6 to cookies and other privacy info, but Opera File Explorer works well in editing the cookie/vlink and history files. 3) big step towards complience. Both for Opera 5.x and No .06. Complient pages are nearly indistinguishable between the two. NICE! 4) a bit bloated. there is no need for the email etc to be mandatory during install. 5) both Opera 5 and mo 0.6 keep to themselves really well. They install into there own folders and keep there hands off of the System folder. 6) many of the GUI mistakes mage w/ Opera 4.x have been resolved in 5.x. 7) the JRE that installs w/ Opera 5.x works PERFECTLY with Mo 0.6 (and the like). 8) still weak on secure sites w/ Java and/or images. 9) still has general Java limitations. 10) still doesn't tile the windows like 3.x did . (just a personnal pet-peeve!) All in all a great browser. I'm now down to 2 on my system (98 lite micro), Opera 5.01 and Mo 0.6. I finally was able to get rid of my fallbacks (Op 3.62 and NS 4.7x). I have always been a NS basher, but I love the new Mozilla. If it was a bit more stable and a bit more sleek then Opera might have to worry, but for now..... |
