Well, I have finally gotten around to d/ling one of those free ISP's, in this case NetZero. Looks great so far, except for the annoying ads. I'll get used to those I guess. Anyway, it tells me I need to set up a default email client. How do I do that?

I recommend d/ling POW. It automatically closes popup ads and is very easy to use

I usually just click them closed before they load anyway. I must say that I am impressed so far. Even with all the ads this ISP seems to be faster than AOL (which isn't saying much, or so I've heard...) Anyway, AOL has been really flaky for me lately, lots of "site not accepting requests" and "server not located" messages. So I finally said, the heck with this! I'm gonna keep testing out this site, and if I continue liking it as much as I do now, AOL is HISTORY!

I was a customer of NetZero since almost the day it opened. They are one outfit I do not recommend that people try to tamper with their ad banner. It may seeming succeed for a little while, but it'll just get you banned! It's happened to me several times.

As for using e-mail, for subscribers of free internet services, I'd recommend using Hotmail or Yahoo as a permanent e-mail account. Use a second Hotmail (or Yahoo) or the IPS box for spam. OE5 has the ability to use either Yahoo or Hotmail like a regular POP3. In fact, Yahoo is a POP3!

This way, you don't have to worry about your e-mail going south with the ISP. You can get your e-mail from any computer in the world or internet connecting device.

Jenni I hope you have some patience. As a bunch of freebie ISPs are going out of business, NetZero and Juno are going to get overloaded as people try to sign up for them. Another free ISP available is Start Free. They'll run an ad banner either at the top or bottom of the screen.

If you have an American Express Card (Optima and Blue Card are no annual fee cards) American Express Online has an excellent free dialup for its cardmembers.

Yeah, the only thing I'm worried about is they only have one access number that is local to me. But so far I got on last night with no problems (I can remember when it used to take about 30 min. of constant dialing to get on AOL on a Friday night!) and again this morning.
If I decide I don't like this, I'm thinking of switching to the local cable company's dial-up service. It's cheaper (I'm paying AOL $26.95, $5 extra because I don't have a credit card) and they will add it to my cable bill.

I'm not a fan of using ISP based e-mail accounts, especially from the freebies. It's how they keep you hostage. Also, if they go in the tank, so does your e-mail.

I recommend using Hotmail and/or Yahoo for a permanent e-mail address. You can have multiple accounts. These accounts are supported by Outlook Express 5.x directly.

To setup Outlook Express, under TOOL>Accounts>Mail...just follow the instructions. After you finish...go back to PROPERTIES and change the title of the account if you wish and other things.

Hotmail is easier to set up because MS works with you to enter things automatically. "Outsiders" e-mail accounts have to have the pop servers and smtp servers added manually!
