I know AOL 5.0 has been called the upgrade of death (see www.winmag.com/columns/explorer/2000/02.htm )and has caused tons of problems for computer owners that were unlucky enough to install it. I have two questions. First how do you uninstall it so that windows works properly again? Second how to you keep AOL from upgrading if you still want to use AOL 4.0?
I wouldn't have AOL in any case but this is for customers who have already installed it and don't want to change. [Edited by Carl Price on 12-11-2000 at 01:14 PM]

Generally, you can safely upgrade to 5.0 as long as you say "NO" when it asks you if you want to make AOL your default mail and news handler.
If you need to uninstall it, uninstall it, then remove ALL networking components, and uninstall dialup networking using add/remove programs - Windows setup. Then reinstall dialup networking and repair or reinstall IE. I just installed AOL 6.0 on my 98 partition the other day - and it didn't blow up anything - but it sure put a lot of crap into my networking. 4.0 still works well - you just have to keep refusing the upgrade. Any time it starts forcing an upgrade on you that you don't want, you have to ctrl/alt/del to shut AOL down. |
