com port problems
i changed a few things, like set my computer for best performance, and uninstalled a thing i had called hiserial. it was sapposed to speed up my internet but didnt. i have my ups on com1, or rather, did. after i rebooted from changing my settings and then getting rid of hiserial. my com port1 was corrupted or something. i uninstalled it from my devise manager and then reinstalled the com port from add hardware, but now its comport 4. 3 was the highest i had, being what my internet is on. is this bad? what does it mean? also my comport icon in the task bar-the icon looks like a black bar with two red lites that light up green when im connected- is always there. it was never like that before. normaly it only pops up when i connect to the internet. what does that mean? i've been getting bios beeps too, but im goin to check that out now. dont know if its all related, or what coused it...

If Windows thinks com ports already exist it will add virtual ports for devices that it detects which require a com port.
So if you reinstalled the port with a modem attached then yes, having it on 4 is normal. As for the beeps, get the manual for your motherboard and you can find out what the beep codes mean. |
