dsl protocols
hey everyone,
can anyone tell me what protocols are used to connect a dsl modem up with it's service? is there more to it than tcp/ip? my company is getting a new router, and the guy that is programming it is asking me these questions that i can't answer, and i can't get a definitive answer from the dsl company.

There are several, yes.
There are 2 different protocols between the modem/router/bridge/whatever and the telco switch, which are not compatible with each other. There are different ways to authenticate too, if he doesn't have static IPs. Might be plain ole DHCP, might be PPP (of which there are also two varieties). My suggestion would be to tell the person you get at his provider that he can transfer you to someone who does know .

If it's ADSL, it's most likely PPPoE. If it's SDSL, it's most likely straight static TCP/IP.
