Should I get a firewall?
I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this or not. I'm going to be getting dsl in the couple weeks, and I was reading somewere about how its easier for people to hack into a computer that has dsl because its on the internet all the time.Is this true? And should I get a firewall, if so any recomendations?

I recommend that you get one. I like Sygate and alot of others around here like Zonealarm, both have a free version that can be downloaded.

No, we're not really recommending ZoneAlarm any more.
Get Sygate or Kerio http://www.kerio.com/us/kpf_home.html |

I'd recommend getting a router.

If you are going to be doing networking, a router is very easy and has the added benefit of a hardware firewall. If not, it would probably be simpler to just use software.

I normally use Sygate but just started using Kerio and find that it works well and doesn't mess up the computer (like Zone Alarm can).
A router would be a good choice and if you're going to do a home network you're going to need one anyway. Cricket

I think I will get a router because eventualy I'm going to get my mother's computer working again. hehehe, I borowed some parts from her computer to get mine running and didn't tell her, she thinks its a virus that deletes itself after a month if you don't try and start your computer.

Yes, you will need Firewall since your gonna be running a High Speed connection, which is always on, so your always open for an attack. If you can afford it, get a hardware firewall(router), if not go with a software firewall.
I run a hardware firewall and it's doing it's job. |
