Tele-conferencing

I hate typing- that's why my emails are normally so short, (or take forever to type!)

Can anyone with a webcam give me some info on tele-conferencing from home via the net? I was in someone's home in England last year, and we were conversing with their parents, who live in Canada, via their computer webcam and a mike, realtime. Do you know how I can set this up between my rriends and myself?

Is Broadband needed/ useful? I am on broadband, but some of my friends aren't.

Can it work on different Operating Systems

Advice will be appreciated.

The short answer->all windows pc come with netmeeting which will do this just fine. Go to Start->Run and type conf.

Broadband is highly recommended.

If you have a fairly new digital camera it probably can handle the cam part. No money spent so far...If you really get into it, you can drop some bucks of better...

Thanks, ES,

Presumably, the person I am phoning must be signed up for Netmeeting as well? What would be the best directory- the two options given were Microsoft Internet Directory, and meetnow.autodesk.com?

You could take a look at http://www.iphone.shows.it , there are lots of the services you need. You could also try iconnecthere.com's broadband phone.

I've been doing the same with a friend who has moved to Australia. I use MSN messenger and netmeeting for this purpose. Firstly, you and the other person should get (and signup for hotmail account) then get MSN Messenger and whn you both login on messneger, there is an optiion in Messenger to start Netmeeting. Click that and u will b automaticaly connected to the other person (video and sound). No need to find or specify directories. Real simple.

btw he hasn't got broadband and i have but it doesnt make a lot of difference, voice breaks now and again.
