AOL won't let go!!!

Ever since I got my Cable modem, i've been trying to kill my AOL account. I called yesterday and The guy made some lame excuse that his PC was down and that he couldn't cancel it. I was thinking of writing them a letter requesting they cancel my account, but how do I state it correctly?

Call one more time. Get the name of the person you are talking to. Tell them, no excuses the account is to be cancelled as of now. If that doesnt work and you pay with a credit card account, contact the credit card company and tell them any future AOL charges are to be refused and tell them why.

Cool

Even if his computer was in fact down, the information can still be taken over the phone and information entered when system is back up.

Point is that you allowed him to use a delaying tatic.

If it was me I would call back and when I was done they would know for a fact that the account was to be cancelled as of that moment. You can only be a doormat if you lay down and allow it.

Chas

I have gotten a lot of people to switch from AOL by telling this.

Hello, The reason I am calling you is that I want to supply your telephone service. What I am offering is unlimited telephone calls for only $24.00 a month and if you sign up today I will give you 1045 hours of elephone time for FREE!
Now you might be asking yourself how we can make this offer at such a low price? Well here is how it works.
When you make a telephone call, before you connect to the person you are calling you will be redirected to our switching center where for approx 1 minute you will be told about some fantastic offers that we are offering. Then after you talk for 4 minutes, the party you are talking to will be put on hold. Then for the next minute we will update you about the latest offers we have available. You won't even notice this but this sharing your telephone line enables us to offer this service at a low price. Additionally your telephone number and the telephone numbers of the people you call will be made public. Because of this not only will be made aware of various offers from other people, but will be able to get the latest joke or news article thanks to our group calling Buddy Line. And our buddy line is not just for recieving wonderful offers, for instance when you see something that trips your fancy, all you have to do is get on the buddy line and instantly their phones will start ringing with anticipation of the news you have.
Doesn't this sound like something you would like to be a part of? Hello! Hello!

There's one way to get AOL to "let go".
Open a new bank account, and cancel the old one. Cancel all credit cards used with AOL, and get new ones. Change your name. Move to a different city, and finally...
Format your hard drive, and reinstall windows.

Awhile back there was a supposed class-action lawsuit because a reformat was allegedly the only way.

Here's my latest AOL story. We just got a contract for installing and repairing AOL Broadband (DSL). I needed to get my laptop set up for onsite troubleshooting. So, I wiped it and installed a fresh copy of Win98SE. Got it all configured on my Earthlink DSL (using ICS off my desktop) and updated and running sweet. The final thing I needed to do was install AOL, so I dug out the 8.0 CD and installed it. The first install froze the machine at 83%. I kinda knew I was in trouble when it started installing IE6. Well, a reinstall with ALL background apps shut down succeeded. I logged on to my (minimum use) AOL account using TCP/IP and took all the updates (one at a time) - after 7 cycles it was all updated. Well, the last update killed my TCP/IP and nothing would get it back. I gave up and did the old Format C trick and started over. This time, I used Drive Image before installing AOL - so I wouldn't have to stay up all night again - and installed AOL 7 instead of 8. So far, so good.....but now if I go to Windows Update, all I get is the thank you screen, it won't let me scan for updates. NASTY software!

There are good reasons for dumping the AOL training wheels and going online for real. Bad software is just one of them.
