Unhappy How To Stop Pop Up Ads

The Question:
Is there any way to stop pop up ads without using programs?

Since last week i have been getting these annoying pop up ads from the same place to any website I go to. I have no idea why.

Give me your thoughts,

are the pop up ads possibly the windows messenger (not to be confused with MSN Messenger) type? they are usually bland in color... grey, i think...

if they are, that can be stopped easily...

Might be a good idea to run Ad-aware and Spybot and make sure it's not something hiding on your system causing the pop ups.

I would also recommend the google toolbar, found here:
toolbar.google.com
it works great. You should disable Windows Messanger anyway, if you are running XP. Go to start>run>services.msc and right click on Messanger and click properties and then disable. HTH

I started using Mozilla Firebird for my browser and it has a pop-up stopper integrated in it too. Has worked flawlessly so far on the pop-up adds. Works a little different than Explorer though....they use tabs instead of opening new windows, but otherwise its pretty easy and the tabs are kinda cool once you get used to them.
If you want to try it, you can find it at http://www.mozilla.org/
It's like the third one down the page or so. Version 0.6.1 currently.

I've used Firebird exclusively lately and really enjoy it.

Is a brief explanation possible of how the Windows msgr popups work? How those are sent out on the net? The popup ads in extra browser windows I understand, but the "how" of the Windows msgr I don't.

greybeardmr- Window Msgr is a program integrated with windows xp for use in networking- i believe. People have found holes in this and have used it to generate mass pop-ups. All they need is your IP address, if i understand correctly. Any corrections welcome!

I've got Win2k and the msgr popups are frequent and annoying. A dozen or more on any given night on the net. I wonder, might a website/server record the IP address from the browser and then run a script that posts a msg to that IP addr with Win Msgr?

pop-ups

Just came across this site-may be worth checking out.
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm Seems as though they are using a hosts file to block pop-ups. Anyone familiar with this concept and will it work??

Thumbs up HOSTS file

Yes,but it takes a little work on the part of the user. This is the method I use, and when properly configured, in conjuction with my browsers (avant) built in pop up blocker is VERY effective. Best of all the hosts file method incurs no noticeble perfomance penalty, and is also useful in speeding dns lookups

you can't block all popups by modifying the hosts file, actually, only a minority of popups will be blocked.

And modifying the hosts file so that some URLs point to the local computer is a security hazard.

I suggest you either use one of the 3rd party popup blockers recommended here with IE, or use another browser like Mozilla, or Opera.

Use Mozilla with its own Popup Blocker.

More importantly though is why you're getting popups all the time at the moment.

You should look at Ad-Aware from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

And
Spybot Search and Destroy from
http://www.safer-networking.org/inde...&page=download

HTH, Thanks

Jim

Windows XP SP2 will be out shortly. It includes a new version of IE with a built-in popup blocker that seems to work fine. So, you could just wait a bit.

A good way of getting rid of the Windows Messenger is to find the "messenger.exe" and rename to like "messenger_.exe".
I also use the google toolbar which is great.
