computer tries to...
log on to the internet every time I open a folder. I'm running xp home w/ie6. It use to not do it. I have not added any weird toolbars or anything else. Now a year after installing xp it tries to logon every time I open a new folder (dial up dialog box pops up) then after closing that box several times during the day, when I do want to logon I get the "unable to establish connection" and the modem never attempts to dial. I went into dial up properties because I remember ie4 use to mysteriously change to "never dial a connection" and I'd have to change it back to "always dial..." or something like that, but now in xp all of the properties look ok, but it won't dial. I have to reboot and it will work fine until I close a dial up dialog box and then it won't connect later. Oh yea, "work offline" is not checked.
Thanks, DR |

Have you tried disabling autodial in the services menu?
Click START>CONTROL PANEL and if not already switch to CLASSIC VIEW. Then click ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS and look for the icon that looks like two gears meshed together called SERVICES. Open SERVICES and scroll down to the REMOTE ACCESS AUTO CONNECTION MANAGER. Right click on REMOTE ACCESS AUTO CONNECTION MANAGER and then click on properties. Clcik the button that says STOP, and then in the little window above the STOP button, (which will change to START after you click it) there is a windwo that will say either AUTOMATIC or MANUAL. Click the little arrow to the right and change that to disabled. Click OK at the bottom and the auto connection manager is now gone bye bye and hopefully solve your issue. While you are in the SERVICES menu, you may as well stop and disable the MESSENGER service also so it stops those stupid popups when you are not even in IE. You know... the popup ads that look like Windows warning windows that are almost impossible to close??? |

for the kife of me I cannot figure why XP came with so many of the options enabled by default that Win 2K came with disabled by default.
