Emails going missing

Please help

Everything has been fine until recently a family member claimed he was not getting my emails through to his AOL account from my BtOpenworld ISP.

AOL claimed that BT were not meeting AOL's policies on spam etc. Why now???

I tested this on my yahoo account from my BT email address.

I found that only 1 in the 7 emails sent got through and when it did it was put straight into the spam folder.

All these were sent using outlook express.

When I sent emails via BT's webmail all emails got through and did not go to spam folder but to standard inbox. yippee!!

Any ideas why this is happening with OE and not webmail and why it has started happening atall??

For one, AOL is the worst one to try and get email through. They just have a tendency to butcher emails.

They are all tighter on spam nowadays. I assume that it is because AOL is assuming that you are faking the mail header (making it appear to come from somewhere that it didn't). If you send it using webmail from the site, the mail header is correct and if they looked up the originating email IP address vs. the domain name that it said it came from, it would match. If you sent it out of OE, the IP address would be that of your ISP and not the domain name, hence the blocking.

It could also be related to the recent troubles with Roadrunner and AOL.

lol, AOL claiming some other ISP doesn't meet their standards for spam?

AOL was one of the biggest sources of spam for years.

BtOpenworld is on several ISP's blackball list of spam domains because they fail to address complaints of spam coming from their network. Quite frankly they do nothing and make no reply to complaints, so they end up black balled.

Sometimes ISP's accidently get on each others blocked list because the automated system picks up the reply to headers and if the header is spoofed it may appear to the system it is a spammer coming from a legitimate non spamming ISP.

Twice this year AOL domains ended up on MSN and Earthlinks blocked domain lists so that anybody with an email address ending in @aol.com could not get through to any body with email domains of @msn.com or @earthlink.net.

Two months later, MSN ended up on AOL's list and Earthlink ended up on both MSN and AOL's list.

Update

I decided as I was getting so many problems with BTopenworld to get a free mail address with Freeserve to solve my problems.

Have now had AOL,NTLworld knock back Freeserve email as spam and believe it or not when I contact Freeserve tech support for their FSmail addresses it also knocked back an email with a message saying
"Sorry, your email cannot be accepted as you are in an RBL"

How can they not accept email from their own servers??

What can I do to make sure my emails are getting through??

I.P. Address is 213.122.26.201

Can you explain why you ask. Do these spam filters block my IP address rather than the actual email domain??

If this is the case what is the answer to these emails being knocked back??

They block by IP address of the mail servers. I needed your IP address to see how the ISP's DNS resolved.

The mail server IP's of free serve mail, which resolves to 64.94.110.11 mail.freeservemail.net, is blacklisted as is mail.freeservemail.com. If it is blacklisted, every major ISP subscribes to the lists and therefore your mail will not fly.

pop.btopenworld.com, which resolves to 194.73.73.90 (mail.btinternet.com) is not listed so it must br AOL that is blocking that particular mail server.

Go to www.samspade.org and scroll down to the DNSBLomatic tool and enter your email server name such as mail.freeservemailcom or whatever and see for yourself.

Thanks for the reply.

Although I have been using freeserve this is their free web mail service so I am still connecting through BTOpenworld to send mail from both my BT and Freeserve accounts.

Does this mean that regardless of whose email service I use is it the fact that I am using BT as my ISP that may be causing the problem?

I have seen from other forums that I may not be alone regarding BT but I thought if I changed to another enail provider the problem would be solved.

So am I correct in saying that if it is declined because of the IP address which BT are providing me with when I connect then I may need to change my ISP to solve this?

Sorry if I am being a bit thick here but I always thought my mail was being declined because of the domain name itself.

Is all of your email bouncing or just that to AOL subscribers?

Originally AOL knocked back my BTOPenworld email. I then openend a Freeserve account to solve this but that was also blocked by AOL.

I put this down to AOL but now I am having both email addresses blocked ny NTLWorld and also Freeserve customer services.

Always these mails are sent through my ISP BTOpenworld.

The problem is only once have I had an undelivered message I have only found out that the others never got through after getting in contact with the other recipients by phone.

Well you have a three fold issue.

First, AOL is blocking the btopenworld, so someone with an AOL account or btopenworld has to contact them. They will pay you no attention at all, and the AOL subscriber little more. The contact really needs to come from your ISP to AOL.

Secondly, freeserve mail will be blocked by almost every ISP on the planet because they are considered a Blackhole server for spam.

Keep in mind that IF you are sending several hundred emails a day, for whatever reason, you will be flagged as a spammer yourself and all email no matter what the source will bounce. That is why spammers jump from provider to provider.

Another contributing factor is the SWEN mass mailing virus is decimating email servers world wide. This virus is sending emails from certain servers at the rate of thousands and hour and some legitimate ISP's are having their email servers flagged as spammers and placed on automated black hole lists. This is why it is imperative that you have btopenworld contact the ISP's who are blocking your mail.

Thanks for your replies azscary

I have contacted BT Openworld and it it took a long time for them to admit that there may be a problem.

I have set up another ISP account to try.

I am still trying to get my head round this problem . Maybe you can help.

From your replies and looking at web sites Email is blocked by the IP address and not the domain name.

If this is the case then why is

My new ISP mail going through everytime but Freeserve web mail is still not.

My point is that my IP address is assigned by my ISP when I connect online and and therefore even although I try to send email from Freeserve , I am am still connected through my ISP with the already accepted IP address.

As I explained earlier, the IP address for the freeserve mail server is what is being blocked.

As for Btopenworls, AOL is blocking the IP address of the btopenworld email server.

Your IP is not being blocked, the IP of the mail servers are being blocked.
