Yeah, most of those so called free ISPs are dropping out of the race. Imagine that not making any money giving something away from free. Try http://www.netzero.com , while it lasts.

I use Netzero off and on, it's not bad at all. I actually like it better than AOL, which is what I mainly use, except for the fact that they have a window that pops up no matter what you are doing saying "your account will be terminated in 30 seconds unless you click cancel". So no long unsupervised downloads on Netzero. My Dad uses Juno and a few weeks ago he got a notice that because he was one of their "most frequent users" (meaning he's online a lot) his access was being limited to certain hours. Now he can get on for a little while, and if he tries to get back on that day, he gets a notice saying that he can only sign on after 4 AM! Of course, he could just make more than one name, but he shouldn't have to deal with all that.

When you consider what you get for $14-20 a month with a regular ISP, it's dirt cheap. People who say they can't afford it need to manage their finances better. I tried several freebies as backups, but they were only on a trial basis. For 50 cents a day, less than a coke, you get 24 hours of Internet.

Sarge,
OK, that's fine but for a lot of us, the Internet is not the only thing we are interested in. We are interested in Photoshop, Premiere, Partition Magic, Drive Image, Cool Edit, Ray Gun, MS-Office, Dragon Speaking Naturally, Quicken Lawyer, ACDC, Camtasia, QuarkExpress, and at least 100 other programs and even games. All programs and the cost of the net combined can run you a fortune 10 times over the cost of your computer. The only thing a lot of us will say to those costs is NO THANK YOU. And I personally know of people who are forced to hack into ISPs in order to cut costs. I just wish I knew more about hacking. What I'm trying to say is there are people who if they can afford it will have no problem with paying and there are people who don't have the money to pay and who will never ever pay even if they are forced to learn how to hack into ISPs. |
