Internet Explorer Installer runs instead of browser

System is Win 98.

I have a customer that downloaded her ISP software and during the install it told her that her browser needed to be updated to 5.5 or 6. Appears as if she was running 4.01.

She went to MS and downloaded the IE 6 SP1 and ran the install.

After the reboot, whenever she clicks on IE, the installer runs again. It asks her to reboot and the installer runs again. Over and over it goes and where it stops nobody knows.

We have ran the IE repair. Same problem.

We have went to the MS site and downloaded and installed critical updates and patches. Same problem.

We have went to add/remove and restored a previous version and then installed IE 6 from her ISP's CD. Same problem.

We have clicked START>RUN IEXPLORE.EXE. Same problem.

Rebooted into DOS and ran scanreg /restore and restored the registry to 2 days before the issue began. Same problem.

HELP!!!!!!

Revert it back as far as it will go, then download IE 5.5 SP2 from http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit (85 megs, hope she has broadband) and install it. IE 6 and Win98 can be a major headache.

I already tried that and it did not work.

She has an HP computer and her friend works for HP.

She ended up reinstalling the OS from a Full install after formatting the drive.

Now it is working.
