The limiting factor on dialup is the speed of your modem (if it's a 56K modem, you've already got the top limit), the speed of your computer but mostly the condition of the phone wires, both inside and outside your house.

In other words, all the tweaking in the world isn't going to overcome any of the above bottlenecks.

If you want to try anyway, take a look at the resources on http://www.dslreports.com/tools.

If you have access to broadband, by all means, get it!

You can actually having windows reporting faster, Ive seen some friend of mine doing that a long time ago ... (think it was when broadband wasnt existing and the t-rex was the only thing to make you go fast). Still never really tested if that mod changed anything. You could probably find it on software programs.

I can very easily make your dialup report 115200 - or any number you want, but there is absolutely nothing you can do in Windows to make the modem connect any faster than your phone line is limiting it to that won't actually DECREASE your throughput. You can tweak the connection using tools and you can use a hardware modem - thats about it.

I don't care if you live next door to the phone switch - you will never see 56k - anything over 50.6 is VERY rare. What do you have for a modem and what is your ISP?

That's considered 56k speed. Last I heard 53 was max in the States and you wouldn't notice any difference between 44 and 53 anyway. It could actually slow your browsing experience. Think throughput rather than speed when using 56k.
