Open mpg files in IE6 (XP)

I have had this problem on my work computer (XP) for
a long time and about 1 month ago I upgraded my home PC from 98 to XP. I had no problems until about 1 or 2 days ago when the same problem has happened on my home PC. If I click on a link that has an .mpg, mpeg, etc file, then I
get a "cannot find server" page. Not a 404 file
not found page (which would indicate the server is there,
but the file isn't).

For example:

If I go to this link:

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/aneely14/Dreams.mpg

I should have media player open up and start playing
the file. Instead I get the same thing as if I go here:

http://www.XPandIE6isjunk.com
( a server that doesn't exist)

however if I go to
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/aneely14/Drm.mpg
(a file that is not there)
I get the HTTP 404 error that the file is not found, but the server is.... this is what I should get. So IE6 is going out and seeing that if the .mpg file is really there, then it tells me that the entire server is down.

All file associations are set properly. If I click on a .mpg
media player will open and play it. If I paste
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/aneely14/Dreams.mpg
into the "open url" section of media player, it will play it. And
netscape will download the entire file and then launch
media player and play it. I have searched over the web,
combed through the registry and I can't find anything. Also, any .wmv link will open up media player as it should and plays fine. Also, I can right click on a .mpg, .mpeg, linke and "save as" and I can save the file. .mp3, .wave, .au, etc all work as they should. Thanks in advance for ANY suggestions.

I also went in to the "Media Bar" and selected "Reset preferred types" so that IE would ask me if I wanted to play .mpg files(or any other multimedia file) in the media bar. If I select Yes, then the media bar opens and the .mpg fille will begin playing in the media bar, however if I select No, then I get the "cannot find server" page.

Also, if I am playing the .mpg file in the "Media Bar" and then I go over and right click on the player and select "Play in Default Player", the main part of the IE screen goes to the "cannot find server" page. However if it is a .wmv link that I am playing and I do the same, it does as it should and opens Media Player in its own window and begins playing the .wmv file there.

I found the problem. It is due to an otherwise terrific program for MPEG2 editing called Womble MPEG2VCR. Several keys are created by Womble mpeg2vcr 3.14, however this is the only key that is changed. It is changed to:

*********************************************************
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\.mpg]
"PerceivedType"="video"
"Content Type"="video/mpeg"
@="mpeg-vcr.Document"
*********************************************************

CHANGE:
@="mpeg-vcr.Document"
BACK TO:
@="mpegfile"
To correct the problem.

WOMBLE also creates a similar "mpeg-vcr.Document" key for m2p, m2t, & mpv, but this doesn't cause a problem because they weren't there to begin with.
