Hey I wonder if anyone out there can clear things up for me.

I should be getting cable soon, and I would like to share the connection to at least 3 computers.

I read in prevous posts that someone recommended routers and such.

I was wondering, Will a Hub act as a router? Or do u need a specialed router to share the connection? Im not too concerned with firewalls etc...its only a little home network on which I can run Software solutions.

Thanks.

A hub will not act as a router. I use the Linksys 4-port router. You can replace your hub with a router and get better performance. Check here for pricing.

If you've already set up your LAN, then you only need the single port router, or use ICS.

Yeah, at the moment I have a 2 pc lan, that I share my dial up accoutn with Proxy+ (Used Winproxy, and that was very nice, until the days ran out). Ill be adding another Old p75 for simple file hosting/Printer server and also a M8 wants to bring a PC round to play LAN games.

I read setting up 2 NICs on one pc is very complicated? is it worth considering?

Pricegrabber only gets prices for US Ill have a look around, but I want to spend as little as posable.

I have 2 nics in my machine and it was pretty simple to set up. and I used to use win98se ics which is a bit more complicated and troublesome before I switched to win2k. The only advice I can give is that if you do get two nics in one machine be sure that they are two different brands or models so that you can tell them apart. Nothing worse than trying to tell which is connected to the cable modem and which to your network.
