Problem with IE6----"page cannot be displayed"

I've got a problem with IE6. I can't access the internet from the shortcut in my quickstart or in the START menu.
However the only way i can get online is to go to control panel and click on windows update and go through there. However when i click on some links i get the "page cannot be displayed". When i click on the icons i get a "page cannot be displayed error" as well. Its really annoying.

Another strange thing is that i copied and paste the error address into google to see what i would find and i get the "page cannot be displayed error". But i can type in normal search commands and they come up fine.

I have downloaded all the latest updates but still no joy.

Could i have a virus. Are there any free virus checkers?

Thanks

Have you scanned for spyware? If not, download, install, immediately update and then run Spybot and/or AdAware. Read the help files to familiarize yourself with how they work. I recommend you use them both since each tends to find things the other misses. Let them clean up any spyware found.

Then, to be doubly sure, download and run CWShredder and run it (link to the download is near the bottom of the page).
