I have Road Runner cable modem service in NYC. It worked fine for about 4 months. Then I started to have a problem where I would lose my connection after about 15 - 20 minutes of inactivity. All of my TCP/IP settings are correct. I'm using Win 98 SE by the way. Reboot restores my connection, but the problem is still there. Road Runner tech support wasn't much help and they eventually came out and gave me a new modem, but that didn't help either. Anyone else ever hear of this? It's not just my browser, it's e-mail, etc. I can release and renew my IP address but it does not restore the connection.

"I would loose my connection after about 15 - 20 minutes of inactivity." If your going to be away from the pc, why not manually disconnet? Should be easier to re-connect without having to reboot. You might try setting your email program to check for new mail every 5 minutes. I also believe there are sharewares out there that will ping your isp and make it look like your using the pc. |

Yes, I know how to work around the problem. I'm just looking for a permanent fix, or to see if anyone knows what's causing it. Thanks for your reply.

ive been having a similar prob, since last october, and it finally seems fixed now. After numerous explaining of the problem to tech support, i realized that they seem to follow a "set problem solving technique".
Well, my prob was that i would b using the internet for, then all of a sudden, i would disconnect. Well, the company came out a number of times, checked the line (no probs found), changed the modem, i changed my NIC, RJ-45, re-installed windows.....but still i had the prob. Well, until early this year, the problem was solved. Apparently, even though the line signal was checked there was a problem with the piece of cable connecting from my house to the box out infront. When the cable was replaced, everything worked perfectly. Just try doing everything u can on ur side: change ur ethernet card, change the RJ-45, even could try a windows re-install. If u still get a prob, then its obvious;y a prob outside somewhere. Hope this helps God Father |

Do you have DSL in your area? You don't have to switch. Usually the threat of switching is enough. Tell them that if they want to keep your business, they had better come out and solve this problem. Their support gets a bit better when you force the issue especially if they have competition in the area. Your connection is supposed to be always on. You can't really disconnect without turning off the modem.
