Broadband problem - winsock.dll?

Hi there,

I wonder if you can help with a little query I have with a cable broadband connection.

One of my clients (running Windows 98 SE) phoned to say his internet connection has stopped working, and that no pages can be viewed. No servers could be pinged except the ISP's server, so I guess that proves the connection is all ok and working.

Also, he did have the connection working after broadband was first installed so I guess its not a fault with the ISP (ntl:home - UK).

The ISP says Windows 98 is to blame, suggesting I replace winsock.dll with the one on the Win CD. I did this but nothing changed. I ran Adaware and it came up with several spyware (400 in fact) and cleared them. I also ran a virus check, but nothing was found.

I performed a clean installation of Windows XP and have suggested he runs the ISPs CD to get the internet up and running. Would this have solved the problem? Are there any other things I could try?

Thanks.

unsure about NTL but you could try asking if the network card has been changed i think they use mac addresses to verify users same as Blueyonder if the mac is unreisted then maybe this is the problem also check if he is using a router now, although the winsock error is a different thing i am just wondering if he has installed some connection sharing software.

letme know how you get on and if XP fixed it i am curious otherwise i will ask some ntl users for ya

Regards

Thanks for your reply.

The broadband modem is connected via usb, no NIC is installed. The modem is being recognised and the driver installs correctly.

Yes, ntl does use mac addresses. Will let you know if the format/reinstallation has resolved the problem.
